Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

Proposal Background Information
Cathedral Park Jazz Festival , Always the Third Weekend in July

What began in 1981, when friends and neighbors threw a party in the memory of St. John’s Howard Galbraith, has turned into the largest and oldest free jazz and blues event west of the Mississippi. The founding group incorporated with non-profit status and developed a formula for maintaining the quality of music and atmosphere that still exists at the festival today.

Drawing on local and nationally known as Jazz and Blues greats, the entertainment is always top-notch. Long time radio sponsor Kmhd 89.1fm simulcasts all twenty hours of the festival over its jazz station airwaves reaching 90,000 listeners in the greater Portland Metro area. Information booths for community organizations and sponsors and a variety of food concessions complete the community oriented festival atmosphere.

Cathedral Park Jazz Festival has a long tradition of taking place on the third weekend of July in the majestic natural setting of Cathedral Park beneath the historic St. Johns Bridge. This festival is a free 3-day event that provides a very diverse audience the opportunity to enjoy “Jazz,” America’s original art form. The Festival draws an attendance of about 1,500 on Friday night and 3,000 to 5,000 people per day over the weekend.

The event provides families, young people and seniors of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds an opportunity see world-class music that most people could not experience otherwise. The festival is administered and staffed through volunteer efforts and has been for all of it’s long history. The financial support is from both the private and public sector and its success is dependent on the continuation of this generosity.

The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival Committee is dedicated to providing a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for our guests, performers, sponsors and volunteers. The St. Johns community receives positive media exposure to the greater Portland Metro Area; this event draws attendance from the Greater Northwest. The Jazz Festival is a memorial to the spirit of community activism and is a leading symbol of community pride.
